Celebrity Encounters

18 09 2008

Good morning folks.  As always, I’d like to thank you all for coming by for a read.  Just me knowing that I could possibly give you a nugget of goodness during your day as you sit in your cubicle (and for those of you lucky folk, at your desk in an office with a door that closes) brings me joy.  This is something I could do for free.  Wait a minute…I am doing it for free! Damn! Oh well. :(

Hey if you notice, to your right there is a link that says “Subscribe” that I had put in.  So do it…..Please?

Today’s post is not so much about me, but more so a forum for people to share their celebrity encounters.  People over the world go nuts for celebrities, whether they be pro athletes, actors and actresses, or music artists.  It’s funny because even though we know they are just people, we still behave like they are something other than.  I guess the whole mystique is because we either admire their talent and/or have a crush on them and wonder how they really are in person.  Well I’ve had a few encounters of note, just as I’m sure you have.  It’s funny how it happens too.  I don’t go out and actively try to meet a celebrity (well maybe one – Aaliyah).  I’ll just be somewhere and look up, and there they are.  I of course don’t want to squander the opportunity, so I say something (usually something dumb sounding), and after the moment is gone I think about all the things I should have said.  So here are a few of my stories.

Chilli

Im her future babys daddy

I'm her future baby's daddy

I’ll lead off with my most memorable, because I had a crush on her, and heck, still do.  Me and my boys were riding the MARTA to Lenox Mall.  This is back in the beginning of 96.  On the train on the way there we were talking about something or other, and ironically I said “Man, wouldn’t it be some sh!t if we saw TLC in the mall!”, which launched a conversation about which one we would most want to have as our woman (silly I know).  I think at the time I was sweetest on T-Boz, so I picked her, but Chilli was a close second.

So we get to the mall to walk around looking at girls and stuff that we can’t afford, except for music which used to give a broke college student a reason to at least carry a bag around (who buys CDs anymore??).  As we were rounding the corner of California Pizza Kitchen headed towards the food court, who other than Chilli is walking our direction with two of her girls that we didn’t recognize.  It caught us so off guard that the three of us said nothing and walked right past her.  After we did, my eyes went big and I was like “Oh Sh!t man! Why didn’t we say anything!?? Damn she was fine! Man if I see her again, I GOT to say something to her!”

We scarfed our food down and continued our mall stroll and were upstairs when we spotted a small group huddled around a little person.  It was Chilli and a couple people who were getting autographs.  It was an off day (like a Tuesday) so there weren’t too many people there to cause a big commotion.  So we went downstairs and I walked up to her with a crinkled up piece of paper bag from my Chick Fil A and a pen.  With a grin on my face I said “Excuse me Chilli, can I get your autograph?” (smooth I know).  She smiled and said “Sure you can!” Now she is a little little tiny woman. she had to be like 4′11 1/2″ and 87 lbs.  She had on a purple silk jogging suit and her hair was down and all wavy like it usually is.  She looks exactly like her pictures.  Simply beautiful, but oh so tiny!  I had to turn around and bend way down so she could sign it.  She held on to my other shoulder and as I was stooping down she said “Thank you baby!”  My day was made.

Now she was really really nice.  It could have been that this was before “Hot Sexy Cool” and the “Oooooh on the TLC tip!” fame and money had dwindled, but I’d like to think that she’s like that all the time. I lost the autograph, but I still have the memory!  Chilli if you’re reading this (yeah right), I just want you to know even though Usher didn’t want you (what a fool), I’ll keep a place in my heart just for you! :)

Usher

Ursh

Ursh

Speaking of which, I didn’t really meet the dude, but my freshman year in the AUC I had to go to a music  performance (some orchestral thing) they were giving at Spelman for extra credit in my music class.  I got there late and the music hall was filled and they weren’t letting anyone else in.  I was lined up with the rest of the latecomers and I was standing behind Usher who was with his then girlfriend – Ben Vereen’s daughter.  Who knew Chicken George’s daughter would have so much donk!! I was 19 at the time so Usher had to be 16 or 17.  Chicken George’s daughter had to be my age or older.  Go head Ursh!  Hey, I guess he always had a thing for older women! From Chicken George’s daughter to Chilli to his wife.  All older.  Hey, I’m not mad at em!

Zino

This dude isn’t really a celebrity as far as I’m concerned but I think the story is funny.  I was on South Beach for Memorial Weekend and of course it was packed on that main street next to the beach (Ocean Side Drive I think) but there were so many people just packing the sidewalk I broke away to stand in between two parked cars to get a breather.  A dude did the same thing a few seconds later and stood right next to me.  I looked and didn’t think anything of it, just some yellow dude with cornrows and shades – nothing out of the ordinary.  Then I thought and turned to him and said “Oh! What’s up Sean Paul!”  He looked at me and said “Aww man I’m not Sean Paul….” I said “Oh sh!t! My bad!” and then he went on his way.  It didn’t occur to me until after he left that he was that cat Benzino, who at the time was still the owner of The Source.  I felt a little embarassed but I figured that he knew that he looks almost just like that Sean Paul dude so I didn’t feel too bad.

You be the judge:

Sean Paul

Benzino

So share your celebrity encounters and tell the class if they were like you thought they’d be!

While attending my undergrad HBCU, there were always celebrities around. My first homecoming my roommate had to convince me why it was not a good idea to go back to the hotel room with the members of Cypress Hill. I was so naive and thought it would be nice to go to their private party.

Right after ‘X,’ I remember seeing Al Freeman in a hallway and flipping out like a groupie. He’d just played Elijah Muhammad in the film.

Then, there was the time I shook President 42’s hand on campus. That was a life highlight at the time. I’ve met quite a few political celebrities, none of whom would probably remember me.

My sister is an entertainment reporter, and to no avail, I BEGGED her to let me tag along when she got the Terrence Howard assignment. She can make it up with Maxwell, but right now she’s declining the assignment so she can be a “regular” attendee at the concert. Regular, my tail.

I met Benzino too! He must get around, because he came to one of my shows in San Antonio, TX (I used to have my own promotions business on the side when I worked at a radio station). After the show, I thanked him for coming, and started politicking with him about the state of Hip Hop. I wasn’t really listening to what he was saying because I was distracted by how short he was, and he appeared to have a gimp arm. As if he had broken it and never used it once the cast came off. I also think he’s a shady dude because of the way he acquired The Source in the first place. I did ask him for business advice though, and that was just a bunch of yabba dabba doo as well.

i don’t even know who Benzino is but he really does look like Sean Paul in that pic. wow.

um…i saw Solé and Ginuwine one time in the mall. actually, i saw Ginuwine in that mall a couple of times when i worked there on college breaks (he’s from here). i was always too scared to approach him though. and i met Dru Hill (lol) at the mall once too when i was in high school.

my friend and i got a hold of Ginuwine’s phone number (don’t ask how) and actually called him on the phone from my house – she was on one phone and i on another. we pretended that we had met him at a party or something and just started having a conversation with him like we knew him. LOL – please don’t talk about me too badly, i was like 16 and madly in love with that man. he was actually very nice and didn’t seem bothered that we called his house. i don’t think he believed our story though.

i met Gilbert Arenas at a club a couple years ago (does he count as a celebrity?)- that man is Fine in person. years ago, my fam and i ran into Sugar Ray Leonard (also at the mall) LOL. and i met Tatyana Ali at a football game once. when i was in Atlanta, a friend and i were invited to Byron Cage’s home – he is awesome! when i was in high school, a choir i was in performed at the Kennedy Center and we met Will Downing (who was also singing that night and who was also not very nice).

I’ve had a couple of encounters… I grew up with Savion Glover, the tap dancer. We went to the same church and were in the same youth group…. I went to his birthday party one year and met Gregory Hines. ATL is the place to be to meet stars I guess because I knew two. Be Be Moore Campbell’s daughter, Maia, was in the chorus with me and would play with my hair. Julius Irving’s daughter, Jasmine was in my fresman dorm. And I met Keisha Knight Pulliam at school also. I went to a school concert and Q-Tip winked at me (seriously, I was backstage and he winked right at me!!!). In Durham, I’ve met Big Daddy Kane (who still walks around with a jewelled goblet) and Play from Kid and Play…. whew!

I have had quite a few celebrity encounters from my days working at Charlotte Douglas Airport. The very first celebrity I met was Danny Glover. He was getting on a flight to Belize and I asked him for his autograph. Very rude and short with me. Still signed the autograph, but I threw it away. I have met Angie Stone, Faith Evan (Rude)Michelle (Destiny’s Child) Ray Nagin (right after Katrina), Ricky Martin, Rick Flair, Sandra Bullock, and various athletes. My most memorable meet was with Malcolm Jamal Warner. I was suppose to grow up and marry him. He was so nice and hugged me and I was in love with Thoedore Huxtable all over again.

I met former Senator Robert Dole (R-Kansas) during a meeting of trucking executives I covered for a newsletter firm back in 1998 in New Orleans. He was a keynote speaker and came in through rear ballroom door, near where I was standing. He was shaking hands with the gathered folks.

Then Sen. Dole came to me and extended his left hand because his right arm is paralyzed due to an injury he suffered fighing the Germans in WWII. (He was hit in the back by machine gun fire). So I extended my left hand and said “Nice to meet you, Senator.” He smiled, nodded, and kept it moving. I thought it was kind of neat, even though I don’t lean Republican.

I forgot to mention that Maia Campbell was a celebrity in her own right, she played Tiffany on “In the House” with LL Cool Jay… Now that’s a celeb I’d like to meet (sigh)

Suge Knight in Vegas…..I was soooo scared! I was with some friends who wanted to take a picture with him & I was crazy enough to stand there & smile. I’m just glad we got out of there before any fights broke out!

Well, okay, my step-brother, Chad, works at this recording company in New York City. It’s not that big, but it gets him into some pretty cool parties where there is some pretty popular singer/bands. So, yeah, Chad invited me to go with him like every time before, and of course I didn’t think much of it this time, so I said yes and invited my three best friends that I always bring with me, Alenna, Jessica and Jaimee. Okay, so, this time this party was out of country, in London to be exact, so me and my friends were excited since it was our first time going to one of the parties out of country and our first time in London after trying to go there for years. Anyway, we were at the party ‘ooh’-ing and ‘ah’-ing over the celebrities we haven’t seen and seen before, but still adored. I was talking away about Lily Allen’s[[yes!! Lily Allen!]] outfit, which was very pretty and vintage and me and my friends just loved it. So, I was just babbling on and on and I didn’t even notice the completely shocked expressions on all three of my friends faces. So, after about ten minutes, I actually noticed their faces. Okay, so, I followed their gazes to about twenty feet away to none other than McFly. They are not well known in America, but me and my friends are the like the BIGGEST fans of them, me being the biggest out of us four, actually. I’ve never been star strucked before, but I was right then. My friends and I had no idea what to do. We’ve never seen them in person before and of course we wanted to go get autographs and pictures. So, after about fifteen minutes of bribing and after I got bribed with twenty bucks, I made my way over there. Oh, god. I remember this clearly. I was panicking the WHOLE time and I had no idea what to greet them with it. So, anyway, once I finally approached them, Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter were the only ones over there, Harry Judd and Danny Jones gone to who-knows-where[[really wasn't paying much attention because I was too busy being bribed]]. So, once I got up right in front of them, they were just looking at me like I was crazy. I just knew my face had to be all, well, indescribable in one of those oh-my-god-i-look-freaky-because-you-are-a-celebrity way.[[yeah, weird way to describe it]] Anyway, I couldn’t even speak, but finally Tom was like, “Hi?” in one of those questionable ways. I was all like, “Hello, Tom. I mean, Mr. Fletcher. I mean, McFly. I mean, two/fourths of McFly.” And of course, you could only imagine how stupid I looked and felt. Dougie was smiling ear to ear, laughing at me in a way. It was seriously embarrassing. Then, the other two[[Harry and Danny]] came back at that very moment and now I was even more star struck because Danny was my favorite one and I considered him as the cutest of the four. Anyway, I finally said ‘hi’ like a normal person and I finally was able to sound normal as I said, “Okay. I know I sound like some crazy woman[[[I think that was a stupid thing to say!!]] but I was wondering if I could take some pictures and have your guys autographs.” None of them refused, which was really cool. I looked over at my friends and they were still standing there in ah. Then Dougie noticed that I was looking over[[I guess he did because he said this]], “Those your friends?” I just nodded up and down for like two minutes like an idiot. Then[[oh my god, oh my god]] Tom waved over MY friends to join me with THEM. Yeah, cool, I know. So, they came over and they took their individual pictures and we took some with just one McFly member and as a whole big group. But it was all cool because I got two pictures alone with Danny and [[oh my god, oh my god]] he had his arm around my waist BOTH pictures and I got to have mine around his too. They even said goodbye to us nicely, and we got a slight wave from Danny!!![[by the way, these pictures are all framed and on my wall. haha]] Most of you may or may not know them and you might hate them or something if you do know them, but this was the BEST day of my life!! They are super nice and very friendly, not refusing the autograph and pictures. They also look the same in person. Well, just a tad different, but you could still tell it was them. It was the best because they are my heros and they have been my favorite band since they started in 2004. This happened in July of 2008, but nothing THAT great has happened to me since then, even out of all the other celebritys that I have met since that day!! I love McFly <3
